BUYER’S GUIDE

Seven questions before choosing a monitoring system.

A practical checklist for captains, engineers and yacht managers.

Tender seen from above

1. Which jobs must the system do?

List the assets and operating scenarios. Distinguish towing, everyday tender use, tracking other supported assets and any wearable use case. A location requirement and a vessel-health requirement are different specifications.

2. Which vessel information is available?

Identify sensors, onboard networks and interfaces. Ask which data are actually exposed and supported in the proposed installation, rather than relying on a generic capability list.

3. What will the bridge team see?

Ask for the relevant display, software and interface to be demonstrated. Distinguish position targets, detailed telemetry, alert presentation and acknowledgement.

4. How do the communication paths behave?

Confirm local and satellite reporting, update intervals, the age of displayed information and the subscriptions required. Discuss the effect of losing a connection.

5. What happens if power or a link is lost?

Ask the supplier to explain the exact device and configuration. Review power requirements, supported backup behaviour and the information the crew can expect to receive.

6. What is the full installed cost?

Compare hardware, mandatory options, installation, commissioning, subscriptions and support over the same period. A headline package price is not necessarily the full cost of your installation.

7. What happens after commissioning?

Agree training, acceptance records, support responsibilities and software maintenance. For remote updates, confirm supported hardware and the deployment process.
